Using AI to Evaluate Research and Scholarship

Funder and Publisher Guidelines

In addition to the use of AI to create and publish research, there are countless opportunities for its use in the act of evaluating research and scholarship. It’s important to be aware of the rules that apply to its use. In December, 2023, the National Science Foundation published guidelines prohibiting reviewers from uploading contents of research proposals (and related material) to “non-approved Generative AI tools” (Notice to Research Community, 2023). Journal publishers are also developing policies for peer-review. For example, the journal Nature, as of the time of this writing, requests that peer reviewers not upload manuscripts into generative AI tools and that they disclose the use of AI tools if they were used in any way in evaluation of the reviewed material (Artificial Intelligence (AI) | Nature Portfolio, n.d.). These policies will continue to evolve – check for the latest information before embarking on the use of AI in any activity involving the evaluation of research and scholarship.
