To The Reader

The FACT2 Council on Optimizing Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education is very pleased to present the work of our subcommittee dedicated to updating and expanding the first edition of this Guide. This second edition was accomplished by a group of volunteers dedicated to teaching who explore the challenges and opportunities AI presents us. We understand that there are a lot of concerns and anxiety surrounding the inclusion of AI in the educational process. This Guide is designed to provide you with enough information to support you as you engage with this revolutionary change.  We deeply appreciate the leadership of subcommittee co-chairs Lynn Aaron, Rockland Community College, and Dana Gavin, Dutchess County Community College and the contributions of all the subcommittee members listed on the Acknowledgements page that follows.

In addition to the Guide, our task group provides many other resources, including a YouTube channel with recordings of our faculty development events and our upcoming one-day pre-conference symposium on May 21 before the Conference on Instruction and Technology’s (CIT) opening at the University of Buffalo.  We hope to see you there.

How to Use the Guide

This Guide provides a comprehensive overview of AI in higher education and offers essential context for the development and use of AI tools. However, it does not have to be read beginning to end or in a specific order. In fact, because of its broad scope, some sections are not relevant to all teaching situations. We encourage you to identify the parts of the Guide that are most relevant for your context and read them in the order that makes the most sense to you.
